The Fear of Missing Out vs. The Joy of Staying In

You open Instagram and immediately see another group posting their “best night ever,” all smiling under bright lights, making it look like they’re having the time of their lives. Meanwhile, you’re in bed debating whether to start a new show or rewatch a familiar one. That’s when the FOMO starts to show up.

“Should I have gone out?” “Am I missing something?” “Is my life boring?”

The answer is no.

Social media has created this idea that if you’re not out every weekend, going to popular events, or constantly surrounded by people, you’re somehow not living properly. But in reality, many of those posts are more about looking impressive than actually having a good time. It’s less about enjoyment and more about showing others that they’re enjoying themselves.

Choosing to be around people you don’t genuinely connect with just to avoid feeling left out isn’t worth it. If a group only feels meaningful because you’re afraid of missing out, that’s not friendship, it’s pressure disguised as connection.

There’s real value in staying home, relaxing, and watching something you enjoy without the strain of shallow conversations or forced socialising. No overpriced outings, no draining interactions, just comfort and ease.

So the next time FOMO shows up, remind yourself: you’re not missing anything important if it wasn’t genuine in the first place. Choosing what actually makes you feel good is far more meaningful.
